House, a Barbie Steering Wheel, two Barbie autos that each
seat four, a Barbie tape player, Barbie Hair and Makeup
Model, Barbie Nail Designer Software, and a big box full of
clothes. But Megan wants to have a *collection*, a
peculiarly human urge understood well by the Mattel Toy
Company, which comes up with all this stuff.

It’s too bad they don’t make a Work at Home Mom Barbie. If
they did, they could draw on the life of Ruth Handler for
inspiration. Handler, who passed away last week, is best
known as the inventor of the Barbie doll. She was also one
of the most successful female entrepreneurs of all time,
beginning in an era when women were expected to stay in the
kitchen and out of the boardroom.

Like many of us, Ruth’s career as an entrepreneur began by
accident. Money was tight when she married her husband,
Elliot. She was working as a secretary and he was studying
industrial design. He decided to use his skills to make some
housewares for their apartment. *She* decided that there was
a market for them. They operated their first business out of
their garage. Ruth handled the sales, which reached
$2 million within the first few years… and that was in
1945 dollars. Today that amount would equal ten times as
much!

Ruth and Elliot joined with another designer, Harold “Matt”
Mattson, to form the Mattel Company (named for Matt and
Elliot). They manufactured picture frames. Elliot
realized that he could take the wood scraps from the frames
and turn them into doll furniture. This side business proved
to be so successful that the company changed its focus to
toys.

The folks at Mattel credit Ruth with playing an integral
role in their success. Her natural talent as a marketer
helped the company turn a profit its very first year as a
toymaker. But her biggest was her ability to identify a
market void and fill it (”niche marketing,” which is what
the experts all tell us we should be doing.)

It was just such an instinct that led to the Barbie’s birth.
The 1950’s were an era when little girls played with baby
dolls — in fact, those were just about the only kind you
could buy. But Ruth noticed that her daughter, Barbara, was
fascinated with paper dolls representing adult and teenage
women. She would change their dresses and imagine how life
would be all grown up.

The male ad executives at the company were not impressed
with Ruth’s doll. Neither were the mostly male buyers who
saw her debut at the American Toy Show in 1959. But as Ruth
had guessed, little girls loved her - and 350,000 Barbies
were sold that very first year, which was a record. Mattel
introduced more dolls to the Barbie line over the next
several years, some of which were named after other Handler
family members, such as Ken — Ruth’s son — and Stacie,
Todd and Cheryl, who were named after the Handlers’
grandchildren.

All was going well until 1970, Ruth was diagnosed with
breast cancer. It was a difficult time, bad decisions were
made and the Handlers’ eventually left the successful
company they had founded. But Ruth not only survived her
bout with cancer; her experience inspired her next business
venture.

Ruth told the Los Angeles Times about her fruitless search
for natural-looking prosthetic breast. What was available at
the time was less than adequate. “I looked at the shapeless
glob that lay in the bottom of my brassiere and thought, ‘My
god, the people in this business are men who don’t have to
wear these,’ ” she told the Times. Once again, Ruth
discovered a niche to fill.

Ruth found a designer who created a new prosthetic to her
specifications. Made of liquid silicone and polyurethane, it
looked and felt natural. Her stroke of genius was her
realization that like shoes, it needed to be made up in
“lefts” and “rights.” Then Ruth assembled a sales team made
up of other breast cancer survivors, who demonstrated
her new product to department store buyers and helped train
their sales staffs on how to fit their customers. In 1991,
Ruth sold her company to a division of Kimberly-Clark and
retired.

“Women–and men too–can do almost anything they set their
mind to,” said Ruth. “You have to believe in what you want
to do and have the courage of your convictions.”

Good advice for us all. Rest in peace, Ruth.

Which plastic surgery pictures are the good ones?

It is very easy to retouch these pictures. And I’m not talking only about using Adobe Photoshop - such plain dishonesty won’t work in the long run. But plastic surgery pictures can be taken in such way that they will hide more than they will show. Look only for the pictures that have the qualities described below:
(1) There should be several plastic surgery pictures of one patient. They should be taken from different angles to give you better view of what actually has changed.
(2) The patient should not wear any makeup. It is quite common to take before shots when patients don’t wear any makeup and after shots - when they wear it. Such plastic surgery pictures are almost useless.
(3) The lighting should be similar in both before and after pictures. Playing with lighting can change things in the plastic surgery pictures just as good as the Acrobat Photoshop.

How can we actually use them?

Many brides prefer to stay with traditional white and that’s just fine, but remember there are all kinds of shades of white as well, so pick a shade that works well with your skin color. Remember when choosing your bridesmaid’s dresses to consider their skin tone also.

While your hair and eye color play a role in choosing a flattering fabric, your skin tone plays the most important role. Your body is the largest feature and the one people will notice first.

Before you start gown hunting take time to determine your skin tone. Is it warm or cool? An old trick to help determine skin tone is to have a look at the veins on the inside of your wrist. Are they bluish tone or greenish tone? Blue veins indicate a cool skin tone. Green veins indicate a warm skin tone. Another way to tell is by how your skin tans. Women who tend to burn usually have cool skin tones. Woman who tan easily usually have warm skin tones. The third way to tell is to have a look at your face in the mirror [you naked face - no makeup applied] If your skin is fair to medium and has a pink, red, or blue tone then you’re a cool skin tone. If your skin is fair to medium and has more of an olive or golden tone then your skin tone is warm.

Women with cool skin tones look best in: cool white, pure white, silver white, ice blue, pale pink, barely blue. Cool tones can wear vivid blues and reds, deep emerald greens, plums, and pure black. All of the softer pastels from the blues to the roses enhance cool skin tones. Lemon yellows, rich ruby and sapphire also look great. Your makeup should include cool colors such as pinks and lilacs. Cool toned people will look best in blue based colors.

Women with warm skin tones look best in: champagne, yellowy pink, ivory, soft ivory, crisp ivory, camel, oyster white, ecru, palest pink. Any of the natural earth colors with gold translucent undertones work well, mochas, bronzes, sage greens, and mango oranges. In you are looking at reds then look for brick, dark tomato red, or burnt orange reds. Earth greens such as olive, moss and jade also enhance warm skin tone. Your makeup should be on the peach side. Warm tones people will look best in yellow based colors.

When dress hunting if you find your dream dress but the color doesn’t flatter your skin tone, don’t worry! Most gown manufacturers make their gowns in a variety of colors so you’ll be able to choose the shade that is most flattering. When choosing your bridesmaid’s gowns be sure to take them with so that color swatches can be used to see how the color works with their skin. Some days however, it almost gets to me. But then I receive such nice notes of support from you, and my hope is restored, my energy renewed.

Yes, Yes, Yes, I know we are vain to think that we can destroy the Earth. This is what I hear over and over and over. But that is not my concern. My concern is that the environment remains a very hospitable and inhabitable place for humans and all life to live.

Who cares if the Earth will be here millions of years from now, after humans have gone? That is my point, to do something to help stop the destruction of LIFE.

Why do we have to use products that KILL, when there are products that do the same job or better and help to promote life?

Our all purpose cleaner works as well or better than the leading spray all purpose cleaners, for less money, yet if you spray it on a plant daily, it will promote it’s growth. Many of the competitors products will kill it. So what is the purpose of the product that kills, if the product that promotes life does the same job for the same money or less?

Are these products there because people do not care to know what it does to our Earth? Are they there because the manufacturers feel that an amazing new chemical will sell better than old fashioned products from the past? Are they there because the manufacturer can produce it cheaper than natural products?

How many more people will it take that truly care about what the products they buy does to the little bit of the Earth they live on, to save the life of the entire world?

What I am trying to do is to make a difference. I don’t know if I will make enough of a difference to extend life on this planet, but I sure as heck am going to try.

Perhaps my letters don’t make a difference, but perhaps they do. I get letters from people telling me that they had not really thought about recycling before, but now because of my letters they are going to start. People email and tell me that they are going to start looking for products that use less packaging, can be recycled, and if possible is made from recycled material.

I received a very nice letter from a school girl that had taken our products as a science project to demonstrate the effect different products had on plants. She said that they had a lot of questions from people at the science fair who were quite surprised of the results. The results were in favor of that little Earth friendly product, by the way.

When I keep hearing stories like this back, and I see that letters can make a difference in the way people think, and act, and believe, I see that I must not stop!

Through the wonders of the internet, we are able to raise awareness of the need to preserve our Earth, and the means to do it, as with no medium before.

I personally believe that most people are good hearted and do not want to hurt our environment. But I think that there has not been enough education to show COMMON SENSE ways to preserve our Earth.

In one of my previous letters I made a comment that the next time you are holding an empty glass jar in your hand, looking at the trash bin or the recycle bin, that the simple act of throwing it into the recycle bin instead, would save enough energy to light a 100 watt bulb for one hour.

I had a few people tell me that they had never thought about it that way before and were going to start being more careful.

What if these persons then mentions it to other persons? What if it becomes a habit and soon many of us are mentioning this to many people? Sure, not everyone will make a change, but many will because most people are good hearted, and don’t want to damage the Earth. It just takes a little COMMON SENSE advice, for most good hearted people to make a change.

If we just point out to people not to always believe what the name of a product implies. Many product names cause people to think they are Earth friendly by using words like natural, or biodegradable. If you look closely at many of these products, and yes, I would have to say most of these products, they are not what the first glance will tell you.

Barbara and I have been in very trendy national chain stores that tout EARTH FRIENDLY, CRUELTY FREE, NO ANIMAL PRODUCTS, etc., to find animal ingredients labeled on the products.

It is very disappointing, because the salesperson is convinced that they are in a store that truly stands for what they say. When we point out an animal ingredient, and ask what it is, usually the salesperson has no idea. For instance, Carmine is made by crushing beetles, and this is used for the red coloring in most makeup. Next time take a look at the ingredients on the product and you will be surprised how often you will find this ingredient.

Barbara wants to make lipsticks and makeup, and even though I am sure we will, it is near impossible to find supplies that meet our standards. Most all red dyes used in lipsticks are made with Carmine. Actually, I do not know any that are not. Barbara wants to make red lipstick, but short of beet juice, we have no way of coloring it to meet our standards.

If you start looking at ingredients on products, you will not know what they all mean. At least not in the beginning. But after a while you will start to ask questions, and curiosity will lead you to educate yourself.

I would like to establish a list on our website of ingredients in products. We will describe what these products really are, and where they come from. If you have a question about an ingredient, Barb and I will do our best to find the answer for you.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! You can make a difference by just starting to become more aware of the products around you. You can make a difference by mentioning interesting facts to people, like the recycled jar saving enough energy for one hour’s use of a 100 watt bulb. But do not be to pushy! People do not respond to pushy, and usually just resist more.

But by being friendly, and mentioning tidbits non-chalantly, people will start to ask questions themselves.

Shop and purchase your outfit to wear when you leave the reception
Organize the final check list of wedding day events
Confirm all the wedding day accessories are in order, i.e. rings, pillows, garter, etc.

2-Weeks Remaining!

Finalize entertainment arrangements
Go over and finalize music lists
Go over and finalize the special music events, i.e. first dance, dance with parents, etc.
Pick up wedding rings, make sure they fit and review any engravings

1-Week Before Your Big Day!

Review your marriage license to make sure it s in order
Prepare seating arrangements for ceremony
Prepare payment envelopes for Officiate, entertainment and vendors and give to the person who will handle that
Confirm honeymoon reservations
Make necessary honeymoon preparations, i.e. bank, traveler s checks, etc.
Prepare and pack for honeymoon
Confirm out-of-town guest accommodations and transportation
Check in with the florist to confirm arrival time set up
Have your wedding ceremony rehearsal letting everyone know what they will do on the wedding day
Have and ENJOY your rehearsal dinner!

Your Wedding Day!

Allow plenty of time for your scheduled hair and makeup appointments
Allow at least 2 hours for dressing
Bring the rings and marriage license
And MOST IMPORTANTLY, take a long deep breath and relax and enjoy your day!
